Bio Marin Reflection
At BioMarin, the goal is to create cures to rare diseases. Their main goal, though is to maximize shareholders profit. While I was there, I learned that their isn't just one kind of science; there are many and they all intertwine. During the visit, I liked how we got to see the machines work and have real scientist talk to us about what its like to work there. While I was at BioMarin, I learned about the analytical process, purification process, and their production process. They used a lot of complex machinery, including HPLCs (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography), autoclaving (for purification), bioreactors, and several other machines for cell culture. Next time, I wish there was more time so they could answer some questions I had and so we didn't feel so rushed. I would like to learn more about the CHO (chinese hamster ovaries) and how they immortalized it, making it possible to do experiments on it later.
